Meet the Coach
My name is Scott Furr and kiteboarding/kitesurfing is my passion! I grew up near the base of Mount Hood, in Oregon. I learned to sail small boats at boy scout camp and fell in love with being on the water at an early age. I took my first windsurfing lesson in the Gorge when I was 12, but it didn't really take. I grew up watching pirate movies, loved building ship models and I have always been drawn to the mystery and lure of the water and the wind. In high school I bought a sailboat and joined a sailing club on the Willamette River and I also belonged to a rowing team.
My love of boats and the water didn't stop there. I went onto college and received my dual B.S. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the Webb Institute on Long Island, NY. It was at college that I continued my love of wind powered sports. I joined the sailing team for a season but quickly was reacquainted with windsurfing and became addicted, often choosing the windsurfer over the 420 sailboats! I would windsurf Long Island Sound any chance I could and started teaching interested classmates, and several got hooked.
After college I took a position as a naval architect in NYC. I primarily worked in the commercial ship design field designing container ships, oil tankers, tug boats, crane barges and other craft. I continued my love of windsurfing, and even got certified as a US Sailing Windsurfing Instructor. In 2002 I took a kiteboarding lesson in Cabarete, Dominican Republic while on a windsurfing vacation with my wife. I didn't really like it, but back then there was no safety leashes or depower lines. I decided it was a bit to sketchy and stuck to windsurfing.
Eventually I landed in Maine in 2007, still windsurfing as much as possible as I juggled being a stay at home father of three children. In 2010 my brother got hooked on kiteboarding and in 2012 I went back to Cabarete with my father and my younger brother on vacation. My brother talked me into trying kiting again and it took! I slowly began dividing my time on the water between windsurfing and kiting. Over the years my addiction to kiting has taken over! I still windsurf every now and then when the wind really goes crazy, but most of the time I pick the kite which also requires alot less wind to have fun. I have spent the last 12 years kitesurfing the local waters of Maine. I can also be found kite foil boarding, ice kiting, ice winging and snow kiting when conditions allow.
Along with kiting, I am an avid mountain biker, trail builder, skier, ice skater, surfer, paddleboarder, woodworker and beach bum!
I took me a long time, but I finally found my sport. Kiteboarding checks all the boxes for me. It's exhilarating, technical, endlessly challenging, beautiful, and did I say addictive! I truly have a passion for this sport and love to share it with others. The Maine kiting community is amazing as well and we all look out for each other. Kiteboarding has been one of the most rewarding activities I have ever done and I hope to get you out and riding the fabulous waters of Maine with me!
